Parenting is the most difficult job on the plant. Your child will both break your heart and fill it to bursting in the same moment. If we are lucky, we slip into the role of being a parent easily and comfortably, with support from loved ones and sometimes shared experience.

This is not the case for everyone though. It is important to realise everyone’s parenting experience is different. As a parenting expert and parent educator, working locally in Co. Meath in Ireland, and remotely nationwide and worldwide, I counsel and mentor parents of newborns and infants under 6 months.

Difficulties with your newborn can manifest in a variety of ways. I have helped and positively supported parents of newborns with symptoms that range from feeding & sleep issues, signs of digestive discomfort like colic, reflux & constipation to many other seemingly postnatal or even postpartum issues, but which fall under the areas of personal growth and development. It is important to note, where diagnoses exist, these diagnoses are not made by me, but by medical professionals. I support, advise, and assist you as you cope with them. That is my role as a newborn consultant and therapist.

What does working with The Holistic Parent look like?

My ‘Nurturing Newborns and New Parents’ programmes starts with the first session being Day 1. I only take session bookings in blocks of 3. In this programme the sessions are quite day specific. i.e. Day 1, Day 4 and Day 11.

This method works really well and I have been using it for over 12 years. It allows me to firstly assess your newborn and your situation, and design an intervention. Then we progress that intervention bit by bit, allowing time in between, for you and your newborn to implement it.

The holistic health and wellbeing of you and your newborn are of paramount importance to me and that means we begin with three sessions minimum. Any further appointments needed for this issue, after the first course of three, must follow in a timely manner, to retain the benefits of the the work already begun. Further sessions would ideally be on Day 25, Day 39 and Day 60 for example, but may, depending on the issues presenting, need to be Day 18, Day 25 and Day 39. More on that after we’ve met.

When we work together on the ‘Nurturing Newborns and New Parents’ Programme, you make a contractual promise to yourself and your newborn to give you both the chance to thrive and develop. Through advice, guidance, counsel, and sometimes topical therapeutic interventions, I will support you as a new parent and your family.

Newborns Case Study

Name:     Baby Lucy* & Parents Ann* & Liam*, Meath, Ireland

Scenario:   Lucy (newborn) – 11 weeks old sleeping in 20mins sessions only – fussing constantly when feeding, bathing, and dressing – three formula changes in 11 weeks, per GP & PHN instruction – cross and agitated baby – two referrals to children’s hospital – gastroenterology department

Ann (parent) – self-reporting chronically sleep-deprived, weight loss, severe distress, and anxiousness, angry, mourning loss of precious six-week period and beyond, feels baby does not want to bond – guilt at neglecting other children and relationship

Liam (parent) – concerned by Ann’s declining health and by Lucy’s distress and difficulties – feels helpless as Lucy will only settle with Ann – is taking care of as much of the needs of the other children as possible to support Ann

Action:   Assessed baby’s natural lying position, ascertained irregularity in posture. Through holistic reflexology and topical work on the muscles, eased out congestion. Examined joint areas for evidence of congestion. Treatment lasted approx. 35mins in 8-10 min blocks as Lucy was comfortable allowing.

Mentoring with Ann and Liam regarding, holding, nursing, dressing & bathing during this time. Advocated for beneficial exercises, handling and movement. Also placed a focus on the importance of holistic balance and the recognition of parents’ own basic needs during this time.

Outcome:  Following the 2.5hr appointment (30 min consultation and 30 min session took approx. 1.25hrs to deliver as baby quite ‘agitated’ to begin, 1 hr parent mentoring), I left the family at 1:30pm. Ann called at 6:30pm to say Lucy was still asleep after 7 hours, having fallen asleep very shortly after the intervention ceased. The longest she had slept since birth. Ann phoned the following morning to say Lucy had smiled at her for the first time, following a full night’s sleep for both and to expression her joy and relief to feel hopeful about the future.

Long term there was a vast improvement in Lucy’s demeanour, comfort, and routines. Both parents reported feeling they had a different child and were sad that the issues could not have been recognised sooner.

Follow Up:  Lucy, Ann & Liam required six additional sessions over the following ten weeks with marked improvement on each occasion. Both Ann & Liam committed to providing the follow through recommended and were incredibly happy with the results by the end of the sessions.

Lesson:   Trusting your own gut as a parent is a big lesson from this case study. You are truly your newborns advocate. Taking the time to learn how to communicate     with your newborn is a very important lesson.
